About
Meet Amanda
Amanda Mahony creates atmospheric abstract landscapes.
Her artworks invite a deep connection to place, connection to people, and spark conversations that last long after you've walked away.
Much like the abstract expressionists who treated their canvas as an "arena", Amanda enjoys a surface she can interact with.
She keeps returning to a 1m x 1.5m canvas because it mirrors her body, nearly matching her height and arm span.
In the studio, painting becomes a full body workout: it starts off very energetic, then slows right down, building up layers over time like weaving a tapestry, each thread leading to something else.
Her process isn't always intuitive, there are a lot of decisions and deliberations but at the heart of it all, Amanda wants you to feel the joy she feels when painting.
The brush strokes and etchings on the finished canvas act like a physical, visual diary of her time in nature, whether that's a bush walk, a swim, staring out at a view or a road trip.

“When you really look
It’s more than a painting you’re looking at.
Layers of rhythm,
Layers of discovery
And trust in the process.”
The art journey
Amanda's parents gave her a deep love of nature.
She fell in love with the bush at seven, when her family moved to the hinterland of Wangerriburra country/Tamborine Mountain, where her parents built a resort on their avocado farm. Those 12 acres became her playground.
Looking back, she thinks they were buttering her up to paint landscapes.
Amanda loves the meditative feeling of painting.
At its core, her work celebrates the joy of making: a way to capture time, try new things, and accept that some things won't look good but will teach her something.
It's also a way of connecting with people and starting conversations. Amanda feels her best self with a paintbrush in her hand.

Amanda's CV
Amanda Mahony is an artist from Sydney, Australia, working on Wangal Gadigal land.
Amanda is an alumna of the National Art School, Sydney, graduating in 2023. She also studied traditional and contemporary oil and mixed media techniques at the Milan Art Institute in Arizona and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media from Macquarie University. Her earlier career in marketing gave her the skills and experience to devote herself fully to her art practice.
Working with acrylics, oils, oil sticks and impasto mediums, Amanda uses sgraffito, sanding, scoring and scraping to reveal the colours and textures beneath. She builds depth and atmosphere with layers of translucent glazes and textured collage. Her work draws on the bush, sky, water and mountains, using colour and texture to bring across the feeling of a bush walk or road trip. Like a tapestry, each canvas is built slowly over time, echoing the gradual changes found in nature.
Her work has been shown in group exhibitions and initiatives with galleries and businesses in New South Wales and Queensland, and internationally in the United States. It has also been featured on ABC iview's TV series OPTICS, and Amanda was a 2025 finalist in the Fairholme Open Art Prize Exhibition in Toowoomba, QLD.
Amanda exhibits regularly at Sydney Road Gallery, an artist-run cooperative gallery on Sydney's Northern Beaches, and is represented at the Affordable Art Fair by Groundspace Gallery. Her work is held in private collections across Australia, Hong Kong, Europe and the United States.
